Most lawns get the most from it as a quick green-up in spring and summer, and as a hardening, moss-checking treatment in autumn and winter. Grass uses it to build chlorophyll, so a lawn that's short of iron looks pale and washed-out even when it's been fed. A liquid iron for lawns puts soluble iron straight onto the leaf, where it's taken up far faster than a granule that has to break down in the soil — which is why the colour change comes so quickly. Because Iron Sward Liquid contains no nitrogen, you get the colour without the surge of soft growth (or the extra mowing) a high-nitrogen feed brings. Measure out 1–2 ml for every square metre you're treating and dilute it in 30–50 ml of water per m² — so a 100 ml bottle goes into 3–5 litres of water to cover 50–100 m². Apply evenly with a knapsack or pressure sprayer on a still, dry day, ideally after mowing, and keep the spray off paths, patios and stone — it will stain. Use the lower rate for a routine green-up and the top of the range where moss is the target. Wear gloves and eye protection, and keep children and pets off the lawn until it's dry.
