You water, and it runs off or sits on top while the rootzone stays bone dry — that's hydrophobic soil, and the straw-coloured areas it leaves behind are localised dry patch (LDP). A wetting agent breaks that surface tension so water actually goes in, and helps the rootzone hold on to the moisture where your grass can use it. Apply through a knapsack sprayer or a watering can — it can go on straight after mowing — then water in thoroughly so it starts relieving the hydrophobic soil. Don't apply in direct sun or hot temperatures.
