New lawn, patch repair or overseeding?

New lawn

Sowing onto bare, prepared soil. Use the full rate (around 50 g/m²) for thick, even cover from scratch.

Patch repair

Fixing bare or worn areas. Treat each patch like a mini new lawn and use new-lawn volumes (around 50 g/m²) — the lighter overseeding rate won't fill a bare patch.

Overseeding

Scattering seed over an existing lawn to thicken it up. A lighter rate (around 35 g/m²) is plenty, because the established grass fills in too.

Tip: spread it evenly. More seed isn't better — over-applying makes seedlings compete and wastes seed. For even, clump-free coverage, use a broadcast (cast) spreader rather than scattering by hand. Browse seed spreaders →

Why we recommend a pre-seed fertiliser

New grass needs the right foundation. A pre-seed fertiliser is high in phosphorus, which drives strong root development — exactly what young seedlings need to anchor and establish before they put energy into top-growth. Applied to the prepared seed bed before (or as) you sow, it improves germination and gives you a stronger, denser lawn.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does this seed germinate?
Under the right growing conditions you can see growth in as little as 5 days, although many variables (soil contact, water availability, nutrients and soil depth) can affect this.
Should I use pre-seed fertiliser with this lawn seed?
Pre-seed fertiliser is optional, but it ensures your seed bed has the right nutrients to establish new grass seedlings. A fertiliser high in Phosphorus is great for root development - exactly what grass seed needs to build a solid foundation without pushing too much top-growth early on. We supply our own pre-seed fertiliser, Roots & Shoots, available to buy online.
Do I need to add topsoil?
We recommend using topsoil for maximum germination success. One of the biggest success factors when growing from seed is good soil-to-seed contact, which lets nutrients and water surround the seed and kick-starts germination.
