How to apply

How to Use Lawn Seed

For best results, follow these simple steps when using lawn seed:

  1. Prepare the Soil – Remove weeds, rake the surface to break up compacted soil, and level any uneven areas.
  2. Seed Evenly – Spread the seed evenly using a spreader or by hand, following the recommended seeding rate.
  3. Press and Cover – Lightly rake or roll the area to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Avoid burying the seeds too deep.
  4. Water Regularly – Keep the soil consistently moist by watering lightly but frequently, especially during germination (7-21 days).
  5. First Mow – Once the grass reaches about 5-7cm, mow gently with a sharp blade to encourage strong growth.

For overseeding, mow your lawn short, remove debris, and spread seed directly over the existing grass before watering well.

FAQs

Q: How quickly does this seed germinate?

A: Under the right growing conditions, you can see growth in as little as 5-days, although there are many variables (inc. soil contact, water availability, nutrients and soil depth) that can affect this time.

Q: Should I use pre-seed fertiliser with this lawn seed?

A: Pre-seed fertiliser ensures your seed bed has the right nutrients for establishing new grass seedlings. A fertiliser that is high in Phosphorus is great for root development - which is exactly what grass seed needs to establish a solid foundation, without attempting too much top-growth in the early days and weeks. We supply our own pre-seed fertiliser called "Root and Shoots", and is available to buy online too.

Q: Do I need to add topsoil?

A: It is recommended to use topsoil for maximum germination success. One main success factor to growing new grass from seed is ensuring you have maximum soil contact with the seed. This allows nutrients and water to surround the seed and encourages the germination to start.
