This UK lawn care calendar gives you the right job at the right time, month by month: plan and treat moss in winter, feed and mow through spring and summer, renovate in autumn, then rest the lawn over the coldest months. Follow the seasonal rhythm below and your grass stays thicker, greener and more resilient all year.
A great lawn is really just the right small jobs done at the right time. The trouble is remembering what those jobs are and when they are due. This month-by-month UK lawn care calendar sorts that for you, from the first spring feed to winter frost care. Want it to hand? Download our printable Mowd lawn care calendar.
What does a UK lawn care calendar cover?
The UK lawn year splits into four phases: preparation and moss control in late winter, feeding and faster mowing through spring, watering and careful maintenance over summer, then renovation and tidy-up in autumn before the lawn rests. Each phase has a couple of jobs that matter most, and getting the timing right is far more important than doing more. If you would rather not track it all yourself, a seasonal plan delivers the correct treatment to your door as each window opens.
Spring lawn care (March to May)
March
Growth restarts as the soil warms, so make your first cut on a high blade setting and apply a balanced spring feed like Equinox Spring Lawn Fertiliser to wake the grass up.
April
Mow more often as growth speeds up, and relieve compacted ground with aeration to help roots reach water and nutrients. If thatch and moss are heavy, this is also a good window to scarify.
May
Feeding and weeds both peak now, so keep the lawn fed and spot-treat broadleaf weeds rather than blanket-spraying where you can.
Summer lawn care (June to August)
June
Raise your mowing height to shade the soil, and water deeply once a week in the morning rather than little and often.
July
Keep the cut high, watch for drought stress, and apply a high-potassium summer feed, always watered in. Our guide on summer lawn feed and why water makes it work covers this in full.
August
Keep watering deep and infrequent, and on hard or sandy soil use a granular wetting agent so moisture and feed soak into the root zone instead of running off.
Autumn lawn care (September to November)
September
This is prime renovation month: scarify, aerate and overseed thin or bare areas while the soil is still warm. A pre-seed fertiliser helps new grass establish, and our renovation guide walks through the steps.
October
Apply an autumn feed to harden the lawn for winter, and start clearing fallen leaves before they smother the grass.
November
Keep leaves off the lawn and reduce mowing as growth slows, raising the blade for the last few cuts of the year.
Winter lawn care (December to February)
December
Stay off frosted grass to avoid damage, and a winter feed supports roots and disease resistance through the cold.
January
With growth paused, plan the year ahead and service your kit: sharpen mower blades and book any machinery service early before the spring rush.
February
Rake out winter debris to let light and air in, and treat early moss in damp, shaded spots before it spreads.

Frequently asked questions
When should I start lawn care in spring?
- Start when the grass begins growing again, usually March as the soil warms. Make a high first cut and apply a spring feed; avoid working the lawn while it is still frosted or waterlogged.
How often should I feed my lawn through the year?
- A seasonal feed roughly every quarter, spring, summer, autumn and winter, keeps the lawn nourished without overdoing it. Each season uses a different formula, which is why a seasonal plan sends the right one at the right time.
What lawn jobs matter most in each season?
- Spring is feeding and the first mows, summer is mowing height and watering, autumn is renovation and an autumn feed, and winter is moss control, planning and staying off frosted grass.
Do I need to do anything to my lawn in winter?
- Very little, and that is the point. Keep leaves cleared, stay off frozen grass, apply a winter feed for resilience, and use the quiet months to plan and service your tools.
